David Renshaw, artist, is best known for his ‘Northern Romance’ paintings, as well as his landscapes. Born in Southport in 1973, he had a passion for art from an early age. It was during his school years that he realised that he could make a living from his art. He left school and began studying graphic design where he learned about different types of media to create artwork. It was at this time that he began painting commissions for people consisting mainly of watercolours and pencil sketches. After many years in the picture framing industry, he decided to take the plunge and follow his dreams and concentrate on his artwork.
David Renshaw, artist’s paintings are admired for their strong colour, composition and storytelling. Along with his spectacular landscapes, all of which capture a warmth and glow, he is also known for his hugely popular ‘Northern Romance’ paintings. Through these paintings, he takes his viewers on a journey with his characters ‘Ted and Doris’ who travel the British landscape on their adventures together. You’ll notice a red heart in each of these paintings, eloquently symbolising the enduring love between a couple. His Ted and Doris paintings are inspired by the close relationship he had with his Grandmother, who often told him stories of his Grandfather who died when David was a young child.
David Renshaw, artist, needed a different direction for his paintings, something other than landscapes, where people could connect to on an emotional level. So the couple for whom he’s now best known, Ted and Doris, were born. The loving pair are in all of his paintings now, either at home, or travelling in their VW camper van, and always with a symbolic heart somewhere in the image. He tries to make his work feel atmospheric, with particular attention to sky and cloud formations as they are considered to be vital to the mood of the finished painting.
